In May 2022, Studio Multi was invited by British Land to submit proposals for a cafe pavilion opposite The Printworks, as part of their Canada Water Masterplan.
A memory of the water’s edge
The building is aligned with the former edge of Quebec Water, one of the great timber ponds used to contain lumber before it was brought up onto the quayside.
A deep cantilevered canopy shelters the edge-line, referencing the original timber warehouse buildings that lined the water in the heyday of dock activity.
An industrial relic with circular economy
The pavilion looks directly toward the functional yet heroic mass of the Printworks across the park. The building references the Printworks’ form-follows-function aesthetic and reuses salvaged building components from the strip-out of the main building. By borrowing some of the DNA of the mother building, the new pavilion will create a small counterpoint across the park.
